Every state and city page on this site is built from public data published by U.S. government agencies, and we cite the source next to each figure. When a figure is not available or has been withheld for confidentiality, we leave it out rather than estimate it.
Data we use
- Electrician employment and wages: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, occupation 47-2111 (electricians).
- Electrical contractor establishments, employees, and payroll: U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023, NAICS 238210 (electrical contractors and other wiring installation contractors), at the state and county level. The Census Bureau withholds some county employment figures; those are omitted.
- Residential construction activity: U.S. Census Bureau, Building Permits Survey, 2024 annual state estimates.
- Housing age and building type: U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-year estimates, 2020–2024 (tables B25003, B25024, B25035).
- Population: U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2024 city population estimates. In-depth city guides cover the largest cities in each state for which the Census data above is available.
- Licensing and workers' compensation rules: each state's official licensing and workers' compensation agencies, linked on the state pages.
How we write coverage guidance
Coverage explanations describe how commercial policies for contractors commonly work. Policy forms, endorsements, and underwriting rules differ by insurer and state, so the policy you are issued always controls. Nothing on this site is legal, tax, or coverage advice, and a quote is not a binder.
Updates
We review pages when new data is released and show a last-updated date on each page. This page was last reviewed October 15, 2026.
